The witch, the wolf, and the mermaid

My group did our presentation on how fairy tales were reflected in the novel Lolita. I was lucky to clinch the parts of the wolf from Little Red Riding Hood and Ariel from the Little Mermaid. The context for our skit was fun from the beginning. We had to come up with a way to bring out the dirty nature of the fairy tale. The wolf was an easy character to connect with Humbert Humbert and Lolita. I was a dirty wolf waiting to get a piece (to eat) of the nice young Little Red Riding Hood. In the play we set it up so that I was staring at Red and Lolita talking while Humbert walks up to me. We created the doppleganger image perfectly within that scene. The funny thing about being the wolf in that play was that I was the only character that never got in trouble for my actions.

My next character didn't have as straightforward of a connection as the wolf did. I had to look up a little about the actual Little Mermaid, because I had only seen the Disney version and couldn't get "Under the Sea" song out of my head. Ariel in the story just had her fifteenth birthday and ended up saving a human from a sinking ship and falling in love with him. She basically is the quintessential coming of age story and related really well to Lolita's situation. In each scene I got to stand next to my alluded character and talk to them. The skit really helped put into perspective the connections and allusions that Nabokov uses to put his stories together.
