I really liked Helena LaFave's paper on the theme of red, roses and its connection to fairy tales in Lolita. Since VN says that he sees a lot of text in color, I really like how he uses color to describe the emotions and texture of many of the settings in the novel. Helena's ability to connect the rose to Beauty and the Beast was interesting in showing the contrast between Humbert's sexual desires for Lolita as love compared to need need for true love in the fairy tale. This really helps show how contorted Humbert's views on love really are. For my groups project we are going to be using fairy tales to portray scenes in the novel and are group never discussed the connection between Sleeping Beauty and the novel, so that has become very helpful to me. Humbert really does connect Lolita to the likeness of a rose, which really helps the reader get a better understanding of how to interpret their relationship. This paper has really helped me see how important imagery is in the novel and the different ways color and objects can be portrayed. Good job!
